Imagine being 15, home alone and the biggest disaster to ever hit the US has not only happened, but your stranded in the middle of it with no idea whether your family is ok. Add in a huge dose of realism and danger, a tiny bit of romance and a healthy dose of OMG! and you have ASHFALL.

I’ve read it twice now and it has got to be one of my favorite reads of the past couple of years. After reading it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. What would I do if I was in Alex’s shoes? Would I make the same decisions? Could I survive the intense situations he encounters? It almost felt as if I was holding my breath throughout the book. (really, there was a huge sigh of contentment when I finished).

I’m not one of those people who yells at the screen when I watch TV and movies or normally gets super worked up about what I’m reading but I have to tell you, when I read ASHFALL there was a point when I found myself actually yelling at the book. “NO DON”T GO THERE THERE”S STILL ____ AMOUNT OF PAGES LEFT IN THE BOOK! NO GOOD CAN COME OF THIS!!!!” (notice how I didn’t tell you how many pages so you won’t know which part! Winking smile )

This is one of those books that I think everyone should read. Mike Mullin’s writing is very realistic. If The Yellowstone supervolcano was to actually erupt, I could easily see this story being someone’s reality. The chapters are super short so if you absolutely have to interrupt your reading to do other things its easy to find a stopping point. Not that you’d actually want to though! Everyone who’s read this so far (in my circle) loves it. There’s nothing better than to look up while I’m at work and see teenagers, both male and female, so engrossed in a book that you have to call their names several times to get their attention. There can be no better endorsement for a book than a teen who can’t put it down!

If you haven’t read ASHFALL yet, I highly recommend you pick it up today. The sequel, ASHEN WINTER is due to be released on October 8, 2012. My boss and I are already squealing with excitement over the advance reader copy! I can tell you these books will be on my bookshelf at home and will be read multiple times!

Here is a brief synopsis (for anyone who hasn’t figured out what ASHFALL is about yet) from Goodreads)!

Ashfall is the story of Alex, a teenage boy left alone for the weekend while his parents visit relatives. When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts unexpectedly, Alex is determined to reach his parents. He must travel over a hundred miles in a landscape transformed by a foot of ash and the destruction of every modern convenience that he has ever known, and through a new world in which disaster has brought out both the best and worst in people desperate for food, water, and warmth.

I really need to read Ashfall, but I just can't bring myself to read the post-apocalyptic books. They're just not my thing, which is unfortunate since they're so popular now.

By the way, I tagged you with the Liebster Award on my blog. The post is: http://raesamm.blogspot.com/2012/07/liebster-blog-award.html
